My phone buzzes, startling me awake. I glance at the clock. Four o’clock. Fuck. I’ve slept most of the night. I’m now royally screwed for my next shift at work. The phone buzzes again so I grab it.

You home? It’s Drew.

Stay there.

I wait, but no response comes. Bossy son of a bitch. I consider leaving just to show him he can’t tell me what to do, but there’s a small chance I’ll actually learn something about the case he’s not supposed to be on so I stay put like I’m an obedient dog rather than a stag.

About ten minutes later, someone pounds on the door. It must be Drew. Even his knock is bossy and insistent.

I check the peephole. He’s there, looking fucking exhausted. Something softens inside me. I don’t want to think about why.

I open the door and gesture for him to enter. He dumps a bag on the trunk that serves as my coffee table. “I need you to take a blood sample from me.”

What is he up to? “Why?”

“I need you to analyze the markers in my blood. A vampire’s blood chemistry can show who Changed them.”

“I do understand basic vampire biology.”

He grins.

The fucker is enjoying my annoyance. “I want you to compare my blood to the new vamp blood you detected in the evidence you analyzed. I need to know if any markers match.”

I narrow my eyes at him. “You think they will?” Does that mean his maker is involved? If so, that is why he won’t let go of this case. In fact, if I prove him right, Drew will go after him and damn the consequences. He may be irritating as fuck, but I want him alive and in good shape for fucking.

Drew hesitates, finally saying. “Maybe. I have some leads.”

He’s lying. He knows a hell of a lot more than he’s telling me. “If Trent’s involved, you need to be careful.” Trent was one of the worst vamps the city had ever been plagued with.

Drew rolls his eyes. “Morrison would thank you for that.”

“Look—”

“If I go in and take him out on my own without a warrant, I risk those who work for him getting away.”

As much as Drew hates Trent, I’m not sure losing his underlings is enough of a deterrent.

“And as much as it pains me to admit, I can’t bring down the operation alone,” he added.

“Of course you can’t. How many other vamps do you think are involved?”

Drew scowls. “At least three and based on what I’ve learned so far, they’re absurdly strong. They must be drinking shifter blood or some cocktail that’s even more potent.”

“What would be more potent?”

Drew shakes his head. “I don’t know, but that was Trent’s goal when I made his acquaintance: superblood for super vamps.”

I want to push for more, but I’m surprised I’ve gotten this much out of him.

“So are you going to draw my blood or do I have to find someone else to do it?”

I’m in this whether I want to be or not.
